New Coral Gardens and Hydrothermal Vents Found in the Icy Depths of the Remote South Sandwich Islands
An international team of scientists recently completed a 35-day deep-sea expedition to the South Sandwich Islands, one of the most remote island chains globally, aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel, Falkor (too). During this groundbreaking Ocean Census Flagship expedition, the researchers observed thriving polar ecosystems, uncovered new hydrothermal vents, and documented coral gardens, along with numerous suspected new species. The team also found evidence of explosive volcanism in one of the coldest and most isolated submarine trenches on the planet. Notably, this expedition marked the first confirmed sighting of a juvenile colossal squid, highlighting the rich biodiversity and unexplored wonders of these deep-sea environments.
