The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a Taiwanese applied technology research organization founded in 1973 and headquartered in Zhudong Township, Hsinchu County. ITRI is government-backed and conducts contract and collaborative research intended to advance domestic industry, and it has been credited with incubating major technology companies including TSMC and UMC.
ITRI organizes its research around five areas: smart living, quality health, sustainable environment, resilient society, and enabling technologies for intelligent systems. Within robotics and automation, the institute develops autonomous mobile robots, AI-based perception systems, smart logistics technology, healthcare robots, and drone systems, and in 2026 it established an AI Robotics Innovation and Development Center aimed at applying robotics to manufacturing, healthcare, food service, and disaster response. ITRI also provides technology transfer and licensing, testing and certification services, and industry training and incubation programs.
ITRI reports more than 6,500 employees and maintains international offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Thailand; its Europe office marked its 30th anniversary in 2026.
