Research Team Develops MOFU Robot with Whole-Body Expansion and Contraction Features

A research team led by Associate Professor Yoshihiro Nakata and Taisei Mogi from The University of Electro-Communications, along with Mari Saito from Sony Corporation, has created MOFU, a mobile robot that can expand and contract its entire body. This innovative design aims to enhance the perceived animacy of the robot, making it appear more lifelike.

The significance of this development lies in its potential to improve human-robot interaction by increasing the robot's lifelike qualities. The study explored how the whole-body movement of expansion and contraction influences the perception of animacy, which is crucial for applications in robotics where social interaction is essential.

Looking ahead, the research team's findings, published in PLOS ONE, may pave the way for further advancements in robot design and functionality. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
