New York University has introduced MABEL, a wheeled two-armed robot featuring 56 degrees of freedom and dexterous hands, with a total parts cost of $8,056. The design and bill of materials were published in a paper on arXiv on November 2, authored by Qilong Cheng and senior author Ludovic Righetti, alongside six co-authors from NYU's Center for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence.
MABEL, which stands for Mobile Anthropomorphic Bimanual Embodiment for Learning, is designed to enhance teleoperation and learning capabilities. The robot's specifications include a height range of 1.16 m to 1.80 m, a weight of 61.8 kg, and a load limit of approximately 3.5 kg. It can operate on various power sources, including a 24 V battery pack and swappable 40 V power-tool batteries, providing up to four hours of runtime.
MABEL's parts list, priced as of July 31, 2026, breaks down the costs of its components, with arms costing $2,622 and a mobile base at $1,912. The paper indicates that the team successfully assembled a second robot using the published files and parts list in about two weeks, demonstrating the feasibility of the design for researchers and developers in the field.
