BYD's Humanoid Robot: Not Intended for Industrial Applications

On October 6, BYD Company Limited was granted a design patent for a humanoid robot named 'Embodied Intelligent Robot,' which features walking, balancing, and interaction capabilities for service, education, or industrial scenarios. This patent marks a significant milestone for BYD, which established a dedicated research team for embodied intelligence in 2022 and invested in robotics and sensor technologies in 2023.
The robot, referred to internally as 'Xiao Di,' stands 1.61 meters tall and weighs 58.5 kilograms, with 31 degrees of freedom and a grasping capability of approximately 1 kilogram. In contrast, another robot, internally codenamed 'Yao Shun Yu,' is 1.7 meters tall with a rated load of 50 kilograms and 16 degrees of freedom in its fingers. This distinction suggests that the two robots are designed for different applications, with 'Xiao Di' aimed at service roles rather than industrial use.
As of now, no further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication regarding the official unveiling of these robots. The design patent highlights BYD's commitment to developing humanoid robots, although the technical specifications and operational details remain undisclosed, indicating a potential focus on service-oriented applications rather than traditional industrial environments.
