1X Plans to Ship 50,000 Robots Next Year, Focuses on Reliability

1X aims to ship 50,000 robots in the upcoming year, as stated by CEO Bernt Børnich. He emphasized that the greater challenge lies in ensuring these robots remain operational and do not return to the company. The production of the NEO humanoid will be expanded, with the goal of utilizing deployments to enhance its AI capabilities.

The significance of this initiative is underscored by Børnich's remarks on the importance of quality control in mass production. He noted that while the Hayward factory has a potential capacity of 10,000 units annually, it will not reach that output this year. A new facility in San Carlos is expected to add 100,000 units of capacity, with most of that coming online late next year, bringing the total potential capacity to 110,000 units across both sites.

Looking ahead, 1X's focus will be on maintaining the reliability of its robots, as issues that may seem minor in small batches can escalate in larger fleets. Børnich highlighted the company's ability to implement rapid design changes, which could lead to faster production cycles. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.

Editor's Note

The robotics industry is increasingly focused on the balance between production volume and product reliability. As companies like 1X ramp up manufacturing, ensuring that robots perform effectively in real-world applications will be crucial for long-term success. This challenge is particularly pertinent as the market for humanoid robots continues to evolve.
