On July 17, 2026, Sumitomo Forestry and Mazex announced the introduction of the Karusuke series of forestry cargo drones, aimed at enhancing smart forestry in Japan. The Karusuke 25 drone offers the same payload capacity as the Morito 25 but at a reduced price and smaller size, making it more accessible for forestry operators.
This initiative is significant as it addresses the challenges faced by the Japanese forestry industry, including an aging workforce and high accident rates. By replacing manual labor with drones, the companies aim to reduce physical strain on workers and improve efficiency in reforestation efforts, which are crucial as many plantation forests reach harvest age.
Looking ahead, the Karusuke 25 went on sale on June 29, 2026, with shipments starting from September 1, 2026. The larger Karusuke 55, which can carry more weight, was launched earlier in May 2025. The ongoing collaboration between Sumitomo Forestry and Mazex is expected to further advance the adoption of drone technology in forestry operations.
