AGRIST Inc. is a Japanese agricultural robotics company headquartered in Shintomi-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture, founded on October 24, 2019 by co-chief executives Junichi Saito and Hiroki Hata, growing out of a local farmers' study group whose growers asked for automated greenhouse-harvesting equipment.
AGRIST builds harvesting robots that travel along an overhead wire strung inside greenhouses rather than moving on ground rails, using onboard cameras and machine vision to identify and pick ripe produce. Released machines include the "L" harvesting robot for bell peppers and the "Q" harvesting robot for cucumbers, supported by the AGRIST Farming Planner software app. A separate AI-agriculture effort, developed with Microsoft, turns camera imagery collected by the robots into farm data sets, and a smart-agriculture line designs greenhouse structures suited to robot operation.
The company runs a development farm in Shintomi and, through wholly owned subsidiary AGRIST FARM Inc. (established October 2021), a second farm in Higashikushira, Kagoshima. AGRIST has raised capital across a Series A round (2021), a pre-Series B round (2022), and Series B rounds (2024 and 2025), backed by JAFCO Group, Mizuho Capital, Incubate Fund, and other investors, and has received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award at the 10th Robot Award and a CES 2023 Innovation Award.
