Poland's Air Force Enhances Readiness Against Russian Drones Amid Modernization Challenges

Poland's Air Force is currently operating at peak readiness due to ongoing threats from Russian drones, as stated by Maj. Gen. Ireneusz Nowak. With 80 percent of their focus on air defense, the modernization of Poland's integrated air defenses is still three to four years away, leaving the Air Force to adapt its operational procedures in the interim.
The shift from Visual Identification (VID) to Positive Identification (PI) procedures allows pilots to engage targets based on radar and intelligence data, enhancing responsiveness against UAV threats. However, the cost-effectiveness of using fighter jets against inexpensive drones remains a concern, prompting calls for the development of more efficient weapon systems.
Looking ahead, Poland is integrating Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System missiles on F-16s, although delays in acquiring necessary components have hindered deployment. Additionally, the F/A-50GF aircraft is expected to be operational within two years, providing a promising solution against current aerial threats from Russia, despite ongoing integration challenges.
