Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) is Turkey's national aerospace and defense manufacturer, headquartered in Kahramankazan, Ankara Province. It was established in 1973 to reduce reliance on imported combat aircraft, restructured as a Turkish-US joint venture for F-16 production in 1984, and reconstituted in its current form in 2005 when Turkish shareholders bought out the foreign partners. It is owned by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (54.49 percent) and the Presidency of Defence Industries (45.45 percent), with the remainder held by the Turkish Aeronautical Association.
Turkish Aerospace builds the KAAN fifth-generation fighter, which flew for the first time in 2024 and is under an export contract with Indonesia; the HURJET jet trainer; and the EASA CS-23 certified HURKUS trainer. Rotary-wing programs include the T129 ATAK attack helicopter and the T625 GOKBEY utility helicopter. Unmanned programs include the ANKA and ANKA-3 families, the AKSUNGUR heavy-payload UAV, and the SIMSEK-K loitering munition, alongside the GOKTURK earth-observation satellites.
As of January 2024, Turkish Aerospace employed approximately 17,000 people, including about 7,000 engineers and 6,000 technicians, across units covering airframes, helicopters, unmanned systems, space, and combat-aircraft development, and develops the KAAN engine program with GE Aerospace.
