During the Association of the US Army’s annual conference, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the importance of scaling autonomous weapons and establishing the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM). He highlighted the need for defense acquisition personnel to work closely with warfighters to innovate and adapt technologies effectively.
The establishment of AUTOWARCOM aims to enhance the integration of autonomous and robotic capabilities across the joint force, although Congressional approval is required for its implementation. The Pentagon is already advancing initiatives like Project Agincourt, which consolidates various unmanned technology efforts under a single umbrella to streamline autonomy development.
Looking ahead, the Defense Autonomous Working Group (DAWG) is being integrated into a new Task Force Autonomous Warfare within Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to support ongoing projects. With nearly $55 billion earmarked for DAWG, Hegseth stressed the necessity of this funding to drive transformative change within the Department of Defense, framing it as a generational investment aligned with presidential priorities.
