Physicists at the University of Oxford have successfully recreated the Aharonov–Bohm effect using a hybrid quantum computer. This phenomenon allows a quantum particle to experience a change in its quantum phase due to a magnetic field it never directly interacts with, leading to the suppression of its tunneling between two locations.
This research is significant as it enhances the understanding of quantum mechanics and could aid in simulating complex interactions that are challenging to model with traditional computers. The findings build on the predictions made by Yakir Aharonov and David Bohm in 1959, which have been confirmed through experiments with real electrons.
Looking ahead, the Oxford researchers are exploring the behavior of the Aharonov–Bohm effect in lattice gauge theories, which describe interactions in particle physics. Their innovative hybrid system, developed in 2022, combines qubits and quantum oscillators to simulate these interactions, potentially paving the way for advancements in quantum simulation techniques.
