Rehovot, Israel research university founded 1934, with five faculties including Mathematics and Computer Science; grants only M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees.
The Weizmann Institute of Science is a public research university in Rehovot, Israel, established in April 1934, more than a decade before the State of Israel was founded. It is organized into five faculties -- Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Biology -- and awards M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees exclusively in the natural and exact sciences rather than undergraduate programs.
Within the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, researchers work on computational vision, machine perception, and biological motion modeling; faculty in this area have included Shimon Ullman, a 2015 Israel Prize laureate for work on visual cognition, and Tamar Flash, whose studies of arm and octopus-arm movement have informed soft-robot motion control for rehabilitation and search-and-rescue applications. The Institute's other faculties cover particle physics, structural biology, chemical synthesis, and molecular genetics, with outputs that have fed into medical diagnostics and other applied technologies.
The Rehovot campus supports several thousand scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, and the Institute counts multiple Nobel Prize laureates among its faculty and alumni. Current faculty received the 2026 IUPAP Medal for the Physics of Life (Uri Alon) and the 2026 Held Prize of the US National Academy of Sciences (Irit Dinur).
