The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is Germany's applied research organization, headquartered in Munich and founded in 1949. Institutes carry out contract research for industry and public bodies, transferring results into products and processes for sectors from automotive and machine building to medical technology and energy systems.
The organization employs more than 30,000 people. Its annual research budget is 3.6 billion euros, of which 3.2 billion euros is contract research; at least two-thirds of that comes from industry contracts and publicly funded projects, and industrial revenue reached 966 million euros in 2025.
