Lockheed Martin has unveiled the PAC-3 Edge, a new interceptor designed for the Army's Future Interceptor program. This missile is expected to outperform the current PAC-3 missile by flying further and engaging more advanced targets. Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed’s missiles and fire control unit, indicated that the PAC-3 Edge aims to address next-generation threats identified by the Department of War.
The significance of the PAC-3 Edge lies in its enhanced capabilities, including longer range, higher altitude, and improved target acquisition. Lockheed plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the development of this missile, including significant funding for its seeker and solid rocket motor. The company has already invested between $50 million and $100 million into the project and aims to invest approximately $800 million into the seeker technology alone.
Testing for the PAC-3 Edge is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first deployment expected in 2031. The missile will be produced at Lockheed’s existing PAC-3 line in Camden, Arkansas, where the company is also increasing production of the PAC-3 MSE under a Pentagon agreement to triple interceptor output over the next seven years.
