On August 6, it was reported that Chen Yonghai, former Vice President of Product at XPeng Motors, has officially joined Zhongqing Robotics as Chief Operating Officer, reporting to Chairman and CEO Zhao Tongyang. Chen, who has a 15-year relationship with XPeng founder He Xiaopeng, previously led product development and planning at XPeng, and his expertise is expected to bolster Zhongqing's transition from laboratory to mass production.
Zhongqing Robotics is currently at a critical juncture, aiming for large-scale delivery following a $200 million Series B funding round in April, which valued the company at over 10 billion RMB. The first batch of T800 humanoid robots, produced in Henan, rolled off the assembly line in May, with the company targeting a delivery capacity of thousands of units. Industry experts believe that achieving an annual output of 10,000 units is pivotal for robotic companies to shift from custom production to industrial-scale operations.
Chen's experience in the automotive sector, particularly in identifying target users and scenarios, is seen as crucial for the commercialization of robotics. As the industry evolves from research-focused applications to enterprise solutions, the ability to manage production, control costs, and define products will be key. Chen's addition to Zhongqing Robotics may provide the competitive edge needed to excel in this mass production race.
Editor's Note
The influx of automotive executives into the robotics sector highlights a significant shift in industry dynamics. As companies like Zhongqing Robotics strive for mass production capabilities, the expertise of leaders like Chen Yonghai could be instrumental in navigating the complexities of scaling operations and meeting market demands. This trend reflects a broader movement towards integrating automotive methodologies into robotics, which may redefine competitive strategies in the field.
