Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have launched Pixel, a wheeled robot featuring two arms and a construction cost of under $15,000. This innovative project integrates a learning system that translates human demonstrations into coordinated movements, addressing the challenge of teaching robots more effectively by designing hardware and software in tandem.
The significance of Pixel lies in its potential to enhance accessibility to advanced robotic capabilities at a lower cost. Led by Tony Tao and Jason Jingzhou Liu, with contributions from Ruslan Salakhutdinov and Deepak Pathak, the project emphasizes the importance of co-designing the robotics stack to achieve sophisticated functionalities. The robot's design allows it to perform various household tasks, showcasing its versatility and practical applications.
Pixel's development includes a focus on improving the learning process from human demonstrations, achieving an average task progress of 87% across five different tasks. The next milestone for the project is the anticipated open-source release, which will enable other research labs to build upon Pixel's capabilities and expand its applications in mobile manipulation.
