Agility's Digit Humanoid Robot Begins Operations at Schaeffler's South Carolina Facility

Agility Robotics has deployed its Digit humanoid robot at Schaeffler's auto-parts plant in Cheraw, South Carolina, marking a significant advancement in humanoid labor commercialization. The robot is tasked with moving 25-pound baskets of bearing components, operating eight hours a day, which aligns with Agility's reliability-first strategy.

This deployment is crucial as it addresses workforce shortages in the region, where Schaeffler is actively hiring. The operational cost of Digit is estimated between $10 and $25 per hour, significantly lower than human labor costs, which start at $20 per hour. Agility aims to reduce these costs further, potentially to $2 or $3 per hour, supporting Schaeffler's goal of integrating hundreds of humanoids by 2030.

Looking ahead, Agility plans to introduce a new model of Digit by the end of 2026, featuring advanced sensors for safe operation without physical barriers. This development is part of Agility's long-term vision for human-robot coexistence and reflects its commitment to regulatory compliance, distinguishing it from other startups in the field. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.

Editor's Note

The deployment of Agility's Digit at Schaeffler's facility highlights the growing trend of integrating humanoid robots into heavy manufacturing. As companies face labor shortages, the cost-effectiveness of robotic solutions becomes increasingly appealing. This shift could reshape workforce dynamics and operational strategies in manufacturing sectors.
