UK Police Drone Operator Faces Misconduct Hearing After Child Injury Incident

A police drone operator in Kent, UK, is undergoing disciplinary proceedings after a DJI Matrice 30T drone struck an overhead cable and injured a child in August 2025. The incident occurred while the special police inspector was responding to a disturbance, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that the officer failed to conduct a proper risk assessment before launching the drone.

The child sustained significant injuries to their right thumb and hand, requiring two surgeries after being treated by emergency responders and transferred to specialized hospitals. The IOPC noted that this incident marks the first investigation into a police drone injuring a civilian, highlighting the importance of risk assessment in drone operations, especially in law enforcement contexts.

Kent Police confirmed that the special inspector will face a misconduct meeting due to an alleged breach of professional standards. The DJI Matrice 30T, a professional-grade drone, is designed for various applications, including law enforcement, and features advanced technology that emphasizes safety. However, the IOPC concluded that technology cannot substitute for proper operational preparation and risk assessment.

Editor's Note

This incident underscores the critical need for thorough risk assessments in drone operations, particularly in law enforcement. As the use of advanced drones like the DJI Matrice 30T becomes more prevalent, ensuring that operators adhere to safety protocols is essential to prevent accidents and protect civilians. The outcome of this misconduct hearing may influence future drone policies and training within police forces.
