Tokyo-based O-ID has successfully raised $1.2 million in pre-seed funding to advance its modular humanoid robot towards production, focusing initially on the automotive manufacturing and logistics sectors in Japan.
The funding, with participation from Tawani Ventures, Hustle Fund, and Techstars, will enable O-ID to prepare its first robot for deployment on factory floors. The company's design allows for major modules to be replaced on-site in about five minutes without tools, addressing the growing labor shortage in Japan, which could reach 11 million by 2040.
Looking ahead, O-ID plans to expand its market reach beyond Japan into the U.S. and other industries. The company is also ensuring compliance with industrial safety standards and has filed a provisional U.S. patent for its modular connector technology, marking significant progress in its mission to reshape factory operations.
