"Modular Humanoids, Made in Japan"
Tokyo startup founded 2025 building a modular wheeled humanoid with hot-swappable limbs and joints; raised USD 1.2M pre-seed in Sept 2026.
O-ID is a Tokyo robotics startup developing modular humanoid robots for factory and logistics work. It was founded in Tokyo in 2025 by chief executive Stian Jakobsen, from Norway, who previously worked in cyber defence, and chief technology officer Simon Gormuzov, a Dutch mechanical engineer with a background in industrial robotics; the two met at Waseda University. The company is organised as a Delaware parent, O-ID, Inc., which handles fundraising and international corporate matters, and a Japanese operating entity responsible for research and development, manufacturing and deployment.
The product concept is a humanoid built from swappable modules rather than a single integrated machine. The modules listed on the company site are a head, a Torso.Core unit, shoulder, elbow and forearm modules, a Dex.Grip hand and a holonomic wheeled base, so the robot moves on wheels rather than walking legs. Joints, limbs and compute units can be exchanged on site in minutes, including powered hot-swapping, and on-board sensors track component wear so that a replacement part can be shipped before a failure stops the line. Indicative figures on the site are a height of 172 cm, a weight of 70 kg, a 16 kg payload, 30 degrees of freedom and more than nine modules; a full datasheet is available only on request. O-ID has filed a provisional US patent on its modular connector and states that its Japan-built robots are being designed to meet US National Defense Authorization Act requirements.
Development is at an early stage. The first prototype is a stationary dual-arm unit used for integration and manipulation testing, and a mobile, stronger version is in development. Target tasks include unpacking components, loading and unloading machines, line-side handling, case picking, sorting and packing, with automotive manufacturing and logistics in Japan as the first markets. The company plans to unveil the robot at CES 2027 and run its first factory pilots in early 2027.
In September 2026 O-ID announced a USD 1.2 million pre-seed round led by Chicago-based TAWANI Ventures, with Hustle Fund, Techstars and angel investors taking part. It joined the Techstars Tokyo accelerator in 2025 and has signed a letter of intent with Sumitomo Electric Industries to explore the use of Sumitomo technologies in wire harnesses for humanoid robots.
