ByteDance Researchers Uncover Mechanism Behind Long-Context Retrieval Issues in DeepSeek Models

Researchers from ByteDance's Seed team have discovered a mechanism that contributes to inconsistent long-context retrieval in DeepSeek models. Their findings indicate that chunked KV-cache compression affects retrieval accuracy based on the position of information within a compression window, leading to discrepancies of up to 40 percentage points across different positions.
This research is significant as it highlights the phenomenon of 'phase sensitivity,' where the same information can be easily retrieved from one position but challenging from another. The study also reveals that various attention components in the models are specialized for retrieving information from specific positions, which can mask underlying retrieval weaknesses despite strong average benchmark results.
Moving forward, it will be important to monitor how these insights influence the development of more robust retrieval mechanisms in DeepSeek models. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
