The company's core technology is the Radio Frequency Thruster (RFT), which uses radio-frequency energy to create and accelerate plasma, enabling propellant-agnostic operation with fuels such as iodine, nitrogen, and water. Its Maxwell family of thrusters delivers Hall Effect thruster-level performance at reduced cost and lead time, with the Maxwell Block 1 achieving flight heritage in 2021.
Phase Four also develops multi-mode monopropellant propulsion systems. The company received a DARPA contract of $14.9 million to develop air-breathing electric propulsion for very low Earth orbit operations and has raised approximately $43.6 million in total funding. Phase Four operates a 25,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Hawthorne, California.
