BYD Launches Service Robot 'Xiao Di' Following US Ban Announcement

On July 28, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) imposed a ban preventing Chinese humanoid robots from entering the US market. Just three days later, BYD showcased its 1.61-meter tall service robot named 'Xiao Di' at the 'Di Space' experience center in Zhengzhou. Positioned as a showroom sales assistant, 'Xiao Di' is designed for greeting guests, explaining vehicle models, and demonstrating features, rather than engaging in assembly tasks.
The FCC's new regulations restrict new models of Chinese humanoid robots from obtaining the necessary equipment certification for the US market, citing cybersecurity and espionage risks. This places BYD's 'Xiao Di' and Tesla's Optimus on different starting lines in the US market, where Optimus faces no Chinese competition. However, BYD is not currently reliant on the US market, planning to deploy 2 to 3 'Xiao Di' units in each dealership across its network of over 3,000 locations in China.
'Xiao Di' features 31 degrees of freedom, supports six Chinese dialects and six foreign languages, and utilizes a 360° vision system for autonomous navigation. The robot is capable of performing detailed actions such as object grasping and gesture interaction, making it a functional prototype rather than a concept model. The introduction of 'Xiao Di' marks a significant milestone in BYD's long-term strategy in robotics, which began in 2022, and aims to integrate robots into various environments, starting with showrooms.
