Machida, Tokyo sushi-robot division of Audio-Technica, started 1984; builds nigiri, maki and rice-seasoning machines sold in more than 50 countries.
AUTEC is the food-machinery business of Audio-Technica Corporation, the Japanese audio equipment manufacturer headquartered in Machida, Tokyo. The division was created in 1984, the year it released the ASM50 Nigirikko, the first automatic sushi maker for home use, a product that grew out of an employee idea contest and the company's turntable mechanisms. It has since concentrated on commercial sushi and rice-forming robots for restaurants, supermarkets and food factories.
The lineup carries ASM model numbers. Nigiri machines include the ASM440A/CE and ASM410A/SCE compact sushi robots, the ASM405SCE counter model and the ASM460CE, which forms up to 3,500 sushi rice balls per hour. Maki equipment includes the ASM895A/CE and ASM890A/CE rice sheet robots, which produce a rice mat roughly every six seconds (about 21 sheets a minute) for sushi rolls, burritos and similar wrapped items, and the ASM260A/CE norimaki cutter. The ASM730A/CE and ASM780A/CE shari robots season and cool cooked rice in a slim desktop footprint, and the ASM575A/CE multi-nigiri robot forms onigiri. Models come in Japanese (A) and CE-marked export versions.
The equipment is used in more than 50 countries. In Japan the division runs sales offices and showrooms including Osaka and Fukuoka and exhibits at HCJ and FOOD STYLE Japan; the brand is also marketed in North America through a US sales operation.
