A team from Beijing University of Science and Technology has developed a bionic flapping-wing robot named USTButterfly-II, which features adjustable wing geometries. The robot underwent 95 flight tests with 19 pairs of wings, resulting in a 339% improvement in lift performance and a 46% increase in thrust performance. The AI utilized deep reinforcement learning to optimize wing shapes, achieving a prediction error of less than 7%.
This advancement is significant as it enhances the understanding of butterfly wing dynamics and flight performance, which has traditionally been challenging to study due to the variability in live butterflies and limitations of static models. The research, published in the journal npj Robotics, highlights the potential of AI in biomimetic design and robotics.
USTButterfly-II, weighing 48.3 grams with a wingspan of 57.5 centimeters, is designed with a single motor and a dual crank-rocker mechanism for synchronized wing flapping. The team plans to further explore the implications of their findings on future robotic designs and applications, although no specific future milestones were disclosed at the time of publication.
