Tesla Shares Drop 14% as Musk Highlights Challenges in Optimus Production

Tesla's second-quarter earnings report revealed a revenue of $28.24 billion, surpassing expectations, but with an adjusted earnings per share of $0.33, down 18% year-over-year. Concerns grew as free cash flow turned negative for the first time in two years, alongside a 142% increase in capital expenditures. During the earnings call, Musk stated that Optimus would be the most challenging product for Tesla to scale up production, citing the lack of an existing supply chain for humanoid robots.

Musk emphasized that every component of Optimus is new and not readily available, requiring Tesla to either build a supply chain from scratch or manufacture everything in-house. He noted that the difficulty of scaling production is proportional to the innovation of the components. The Fremont factory's Model S/X production line has been repurposed for Optimus, with the first robots being used for data collection and functionality development.

Despite impressive demonstrations of humanoid robots from competitors, Musk claimed that Optimus would be the first capable of performing tasks autonomously based on voice commands or video demonstrations. Following the earnings report, Tesla's stock plummeted over 14%, marking its largest single-day drop in nearly a year, with a market value loss of approximately $195 billion. Investors are increasingly concerned about the timeline for returns on the ambitious Optimus project.
