NHTSA Proposes New Lighting Standards for Autonomous Vehicles to Indicate Operation Mode

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed new lighting requirements for autonomous vehicles (AVs) that include the use of cyan-colored lights to indicate when a vehicle is operating autonomously. This proposal aims to create a uniform way to identify AVs and establish equipment specifications, including light color and activation methods.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the NHTSA to update regulations that facilitate the adoption of AVs while ensuring safety. The agency is also working on a federal automated vehicle framework and revising federal motor vehicle safety standards to accommodate vehicles that lack traditional controls.
NHTSA's proposal highlights the ongoing evolution of AV regulations, with no further timeline disclosed at the time of publication. Meanwhile, GM is preparing to enhance its vehicles' technology, with plans to introduce significant advancements in 2028, including a new autonomous highway driving feature and a conversational AI assistant for its OnStar service.
