Investments Aim to Strengthen U.S. Battery Supply Chain Resilience

Billions of dollars are being allocated to enhance the domestic battery supply chain in the U.S. The focus has primarily been on securing critical minerals and raw materials essential for battery production. However, true resilience in the supply chain also necessitates the capability to process these materials, manufacture components, and recycle batteries within the same ecosystem.
The U.S. possesses some necessary mineral deposits but often lacks the mining, refining, or processing capacity to convert them into battery-grade materials. This gap leads to a scenario where materials are sourced domestically, processed abroad, and then returned for use in U.S. manufacturing. A coordinated approach is essential to strengthen each link in the supply chain and improve responsiveness to disruptions.
Different battery technologies face varying vulnerabilities based on their reliance on specific raw materials and processing capabilities. Building domestic capacity will require time and investment in infrastructure, alongside efforts to accelerate the learning curve. The lead battery industry exemplifies a mature domestic ecosystem, recycling over 174 million lead batteries annually, which underscores the importance of developing recycling infrastructure for emerging battery chemistries as well.
