Hanwha Systems has successfully demonstrated its laser air defense capabilities by intercepting three target drones during the South Korean Army's Army TIGER+ exercise on October 14. The Cheongwang laser weapon, along with a mobile 30-kilowatt-class laser cannon, showcased its effectiveness in a military setting attended by approximately 500 representatives from various sectors.
This demonstration is significant as it highlights the potential of laser weapons in modern warfare, particularly against inexpensive drone threats. The Cheongwang system, operational since December 2024, is noted for its cost-effectiveness, engaging targets at about 2,000 South Korean won per engagement, which is approximately $1.50. This capability allows for sustained operations as long as electrical power is available, presenting a strategic advantage over traditional missile systems.
Looking ahead, Hanwha Systems is developing a more powerful 50-kilowatt laser-equipped armored vehicle aimed at international defense markets, with plans for serial production by the end of 2027. The company is actively pursuing export opportunities, although no confirmed orders have been announced yet. The effectiveness of these systems against various drone types under different battlefield conditions remains to be fully established.
