It was established on June 14, 1988 by Turkey's Defense Industries Executive Committee as an establishment of the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, with a founding mandate to build indigenous national capability in rocket and missile design and production.

Artillery rockets and multi-barrel systems include the TR-122 MIZRAK family, first deployed in 1996, and the TRG-series guided rockets. Its cruise missile line includes the SOM air-launched cruise missile, first delivered to the Turkish Air Force in 2015, and the CAKIR cruise missile. Anti-tank guided weapons include UMTAS and OMTAS, laser-guided munitions include CIRIT and L-UMTAS, and the MAM family of miniature smart munitions is designed for integration on unmanned aerial platforms. Air defense products include the HISAR-A+ and SUNGUR short-range air defense missile systems, introduced in 2020 alongside the opening of a new Roketsan research center. Naval systems include the ATMACA ship-to-ship missile and the AKYA and ORKA torpedo families. Roketsan also produces micro-satellite launch systems and provides environmental, ballistic, and flight-testing services along with calibration and EMI/EMC testing support for its own and third-party programs.
Company milestones include the YILDIRIM missile system's introduction in 2002, Roketsan's first missile export in 2011, and Turkey's first domestically developed probe rocket launch in 2017. In July 2026, Roketsan's JET-230 supersonic missile was reported tested from Baykar's KIZILELMA unmanned combat aircraft, extending the company's guided-weapons portfolio to air-launched supersonic strike munitions carried by uncrewed platforms.
