Framework for Innovations That Scale Across Emerging and Developed Markets

Amos Winter, the Germeshausen Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, and coauthor Vijay Govindarajan have released a new book detailing a framework for creating innovations that can thrive in both emerging and developed markets. They emphasize that emerging markets are growing at twice the rate of the U.S. and Europe, making them crucial for multinational companies seeking growth.

The authors argue that simply adapting existing products for emerging markets is insufficient; instead, they advocate for a thoughtful design process that addresses unique consumer needs. Their book, 'Global by Design: How to Create Innovations That Scale, Travel, and Transform,' outlines three phases of innovation, focusing on identifying opportunities, designing solutions, and scaling them effectively.

One notable case study in the book discusses a new drip irrigation emitter technology that significantly reduces costs and resource use, set to be commercialized by Toro in early 2027. This innovation aims to address water scarcity in low-resource markets while also appealing to farmers in wealthier regions, highlighting the potential for globally relevant solutions.

Editor's Note

The insights from Winter and Govindarajan's work underscore the importance of tailored innovation strategies in a rapidly evolving global market. As companies look to expand into emerging economies, understanding local needs and adapting products accordingly will be essential for success. This approach not only fosters growth in new markets but also enhances competitiveness in established ones.
