Paramount Group is a South Africa defense manufacturer producing armored vehicles, UGVs, and UAVs for peacekeeping and security operations worldwide.
Paramount Group was established in 1994 by South African entrepreneur and industrialist Ivor Ichikowitz, headquartered in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa. The company is one of Africa's largest independent defense and aerospace manufacturers, operating across land systems, air systems, maritime systems, and advanced technologies. Paramount markets its products to governments, militaries, and peacekeeping forces globally, with a particular focus on emerging markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
Paramount launched its first armored vehicle product, the Marauder Mine Protected Vehicle (MPV), in 2000. The armored vehicle range has since expanded to include the Matador MPV, the Maverick Internal Security Vehicle, the Mbombe 6x6 and 8x8 Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV), and the Maatla 4x4 Light Protected Vehicle, which was unveiled in later years. These platforms are designed using clean-sheet engineering with emphasis on protection against landmines, IEDs, and ballistic threats, combined with high mobility across rough terrain.
In 2013, Paramount Group acquired Advanced Technologies and Engineering (ATE), which had been operating under a business rescue plan. This acquisition brought ATE's unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities into the Paramount portfolio, including the ATE Vulture UAV. Post-acquisition, these capabilities were reorganized under Paramount Advanced Technologies.
Paramount subsequently established Paramount Robotic Systems, a dedicated division focused on developing autonomous capabilities for airborne, land, and sea applications. This division develops unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and autonomous systems for surveillance, border patrol, and force protection missions. The company has expanded internationally, including manufacturing partnerships and joint ventures in Russia, Kazakhstan, India, and the United Arab Emirates, with facilities established to serve regional defense markets.
The company celebrated its 30th anniversary as a global defense manufacturer in 2024, marking three decades of growth from a South African startup to a multinational aerospace and defense group with presence across multiple continents.
