Army Experiments with Small Drones for Tailored Cyber Effects and Jamming

The Army is testing small drones equipped with the Radiofrequency Delivery Effects Platform (RDEP) to deliver tailored cyber effects and jamming capabilities. This experimentation is part of the ongoing development of the 11th Cyber Battalion, which was established in 2022 to enhance tactical-level cyber operations.
The significance of this initiative lies in its potential to extend the reach of tactical cyber operations while minimizing unintended impacts on friendly systems. The RDEP allows operators to load exploits and deliver digital attacks, which can include jamming and accessing Wi-Fi systems, according to Col. David Bergmann, project manager for cyber warfare.
Looking ahead, the Army plans to establish the 12th Cyber Battalion, mirroring the 11th, to bolster its cyber operational capacity. The Army is currently gathering feedback on the necessary capabilities for its drones, focusing on offensive cyber and electronic warfare needs to inform future production decisions.
