29 U.S. Governors Urge Federal Expansion of Counter-Drone Training Initiatives

A bipartisan coalition of 29 U.S. governors has formally requested federal officials to enhance counter-drone training for state and local agencies. This appeal follows the implementation of new powers under the SAFER SKIES Act, which was enacted in December 2025. In a letter dated October 6, the governors emphasized the need for increased access to training for law enforcement, corrections officers, and National Guard personnel.
The significance of this request lies in the governors' assertion that without adequate training capacity, many jurisdictions will struggle to effectively utilize the authorities granted by Congress. They specifically highlighted the need for expanded training opportunities through the FBI’s National Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems Training Center, specialized training for corrections officers to combat drone-related contraband, and enhanced training for National Guard personnel involved in public safety and emergency response.
Looking ahead, the governors' call for expanded training underscores a growing recognition of the challenges posed by drone technology in various sectors. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication, but the ongoing implementation of the SAFER SKIES Act will likely shape future training and operational frameworks for agencies across the nation.
