Company Overview

Pratt Miller is an engineering and product development company headquartered at 29600 W. K. Smith Drive in New Hudson, Michigan. It was founded in 1989 as Pratt & Miller by Gary Pratt and Jim Miller, and its roots are in motorsports: the company runs Corvette Racing for General Motors, competes in IMSA and builds Corvette Z06 GT3.R customer race cars. Today it is organised around three markets, Motorsports, Defense and Mobility, and offers vehicle development, electrification, autonomy and robotics, connected systems and IoT, and technology integration. Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) completed its acquisition of Pratt Miller in January 2021 for $115 million on a cash-free, debt-free basis; Pratt Miller is a wholly owned subsidiary of Oshkosh and kept its name, staff, facilities and branding. Oshkosh said at the time that it would draw on Pratt Miller's work in artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous and connected systems, and electrification.

Pratt Miller Defense, established in 2013, develops optionally-manned and unmanned ground platforms ranging from 2 to 80 tons, covering wheeled and tracked, internal-combustion, hybrid and all-electric designs, along with by-wire integration, mobility and behaviour controls and autonomy integration. Its flagship robotic vehicle is the Expeditionary Modular Autonomous Vehicle (EMAV), a tracked unmanned ground vehicle designed in-house and first completed in January 2018 under a U.S. government contract for platoon-level infantry support. Company data list a top speed of up to 72 km/h, a curb weight of 3.08 tonnes, payload capacity of up to 3,175 kg (7,000 lb), capability on 60% gradients and 35% side slopes, a hybrid-electric drivetrain with electric-only silent watch and silent mobility modes, 28 V and 320 V exportable power, and a 3.84 m by 1.5 m flat deck. EMAV can be driven locally, tele-operated or run autonomously; it is sized for transport inside MV-22, CH-53 and CH-47 aircraft, with two fitting in a C-130, and has a low profile intended for U.S. Marine Corps use. Two EMAVs were assessed at the U.S. Army's Next Generation Combat Vehicle Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) demonstration at the Texas A&M RELLIS campus in May 2019 for the RCV Light and Medium categories.

Pratt Miller Defense is also part of the Oshkosh Defense team, alongside QinetiQ US, in the Army's RCV program; Oshkosh was one of four companies selected for Phase I prototypes in 2023 and submitted its Phase II production-representative prototype proposal in August 2024 together with two Phase I vehicles. In a separate effort it teamed with Oshkosh Defense and Rafael on the Stryker Medium Caliber Weapon System upgrade, for which Oshkosh Defense holds a $942.9 million U.S. Army contract.

For live-fire training, Pratt Miller builds Trackless Moving Targets (TMT): armored robotic target vehicles, from infantry-sized to armored-vehicle-sized, that follow GPS paths, use zone-based hit detection for scoring and reactive behaviours, and offer 360-degree engagement at variable speeds. TMT began as a Small Business Innovation Research effort about twelve years earlier, and on December 2, 2024 the U.S. Army awarded Pratt Miller Defense a multi-year production contract, with Army and National Guard training centers scheduled to begin receiving systems in summer 2025. Other defense products include Flexible Robotic Platforms in Light and Heavy versions with 2WD or 4WD and payloads up to 3,500 lb, and PM-FlexTire, a simulation tool for vehicle mobility on soft soil. Customers shown on its defense page include the U.S. Army, DEVCOM, DARPA, the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, Northrop Grumman and QinetiQ North America. The company has also announced a hydrogen partnership with GreenGT covering defense, motorsport and mobility applications.
