X Square Launches X2Real to Assess Simulation Scores Against Physical Robot Performance

X Square Robot has unveiled X2Real, a benchmark designed to evaluate how well simulation scores predict the performance of robots in real-world scenarios. Announced on October 19, the benchmark encompasses tests in visual and language reasoning, precise manipulation, and coordinated arm movements, utilizing NVIDIA’s Isaac Lab-Arena simulation infrastructure.
The significance of X2Real lies in its ability to provide insights into the correlation between simulation and physical performance. The technical report indicates a correlation of 0.84 for progress scores and 0.74 for success rates across various tasks. However, challenges remain, particularly in precision tasks, where physical trials showed a 70% success rate for placing glasses on a shelf, while simulations failed to achieve any success.
Looking ahead, the report highlights limitations in task coverage, particularly with deformable materials and tactile sensing. This suggests that while X2Real offers a valuable evaluation tool, it should not replace physical testing of robots. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
