Waymo Plans to Launch Driverless Robotaxi Services in Germany by 2027

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, announced its intention to introduce robotaxi rides in Germany by 2027, marking its third international market and first in the European Union. The company will begin phased testing in Munich in the coming weeks, aiming to adapt its technology to the city's unique driving conditions.

This expansion is significant as it underscores Waymo's leadership in the robotaxi sector, having already established operations in 11 U.S. cities and planning to expand to 19 more. The move into Munich aligns with the city's reputation as a global hub for mobility and engineering, which Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana highlighted as a crucial milestone for the company's global growth strategy.

Looking ahead, Waymo's testing in Munich will focus on creating high-definition street maps and training autonomous specialists. The company has already logged nearly 221 million fully autonomous miles, indicating its commitment to advancing driverless technology. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
