Company Overview

Naio Technologies is a French agricultural robotics company founded in 2011 by Gaetan Severac and Aymeric Barthes in Toulouse, France. The company designs, manufactures, and sells autonomous robots for mechanical weeding, cultivation, and crop management, targeting the reduction of chemical herbicide use and farm labor shortages.

Naio Technologies was the first company in the world to bring a commercial agricultural robot to market, with Oz launching in 2013. Since then, the company has expanded its robot lineup to three core platforms:

  • Oz: A compact autonomous weeding and seeding robot suited for market gardening and small vegetable plots. Oz uses GPS and camera-based navigation to move between crop rows and mechanically remove weeds without chemicals.
  • Dino: An autonomous weeding robot designed for large-scale vegetable field production. Dino handles inter-row and intra-row weeding at scale, replacing manual hoeing operations over large acreages.
  • Ted: An autonomous robot designed for viticulture, specifically vineyard row maintenance including under-vine weeding and soil work. Ted is built to operate in the narrow rows and uneven terrain typical of wine-growing regions.

More than 300 Naio robots are deployed across farms in over 25 countries, supported by a distribution network established through international expansion efforts beginning in 2016. The robots are used extensively in Europe and are also exported to North America, Australia, and other markets.

The company is headquartered at 235 rue de la Montagne Noire, 31750 Escalquens, near Toulouse in southern France. Naio Technologies employs over 80 people. The company has raised significant funding, including a EUR 14 million Series A led by Bpifrance, with participation from Pymwymic, Demeter, and Capagro, as well as a subsequent USD 33 million round to scale industrial and commercial operations.

Naio's robots address dual agricultural challenges: the global shortage of farm workers willing to perform repetitive manual weeding, and the agronomic and regulatory pressure to reduce synthetic herbicide use in food production. The company's approach is to use precision mechanical intervention guided by GPS and computer vision, enabling weed control at the per-plant level.
