NATO TASK FORCE X: Deterring Today and Protecting Tomorrow
NATO is launching TASK FORCE X, a specialized initiative aimed at enhancing maritime security in response to increasing threats from Russian aggression, particularly concerning critical undersea infrastructure. The initiative comes in light of recent damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, which connect NATO Allies and highlight vulnerabilities in the region. Allied Command Transformation, in collaboration with Allied Command Operations and NATO Headquarters, is developing a fleet of autonomous systems designed for persistent surveillance and threat detection to improve situational awareness in maritime operations. These advanced capabilities will incorporate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. The system is set to undergo testing in mid-February 2025 as part of the Baltic Sentry exercise, which aims to bolster the Allies' readiness to respond to destabilizing actions.
