On October 12, 2023, Microsoft announced the upcoming release of its third-generation AI accelerator, the 'Maia 300', set to be deployed in production environments starting in 2027. The Maia family aims to be a core inference system for Microsoft's products and services, with plans for a multi-gigawatt rollout. CEO Satya Nadella described this initiative as the company's largest bet on custom silicon to date.
The Maia 300 is designed to handle new AI workloads, including long-context inference and latency-sensitive dialogue tasks, with an expected 40% increase in tokens per megawatt compared to major GPU systems. The throughput of a rack with 96 units is projected to be up to seven times greater than its predecessor, the Maia 200, which is already operational in production environments.
The Maia 200 is currently supporting workloads like Microsoft Copilot and is expected to expand to GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry by the end of the year. The details of the Maia 300 will be showcased at the Microsoft Ignite 2026 event in San Francisco from November 17 to 20, 2026. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
