Rare earth elements are crucial for various technologies, including electric vehicles and military systems. To establish a reliable U.S. supply chain, companies must navigate the complex processes of mining, refining, and manufacturing. Five companies—Tactical Resources, USA Rare Earth, MP Materials, Energy Fuels, and NioCorp Developments—are actively working on different segments of this supply chain.
Tactical Resources is advancing its Peak Project in Texas, focusing on rare earth-enriched materials with significant concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. The company plans to conduct further metallurgical testing and engineering work by September 2026. Meanwhile, USA Rare Earth is implementing a mine-to-magnet strategy, with its Round Top deposit in West Texas and a new manufacturing facility in South Carolina expected to produce 4,000 metric tons of rare earth oxides annually by the end of 2026.
MP Materials operates the Mountain Pass mine in California and is expanding its operations to include metal and magnet manufacturing in Texas. As these companies progress, the U.S. aims to enhance its rare earth processing capabilities, which are currently limited compared to global competitors. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
Editor's Note
The push for increased rare earth processing capacity in the U.S. is critical for reducing dependence on foreign supply chains, particularly in the context of electric vehicles and defense technologies. As companies like Tactical Resources and USA Rare Earth advance their projects, the competitive landscape in the rare earth sector is likely to evolve, impacting procurement strategies and investment opportunities.
