Warehouse Managers Transition to Robot Supervisors Amid Industry Transformation

In September 2026, China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security introduced the new profession of 'Smart Warehouse Operations Technician' under the 'Logistics Service Specialist' category, reflecting a significant transformation in the warehousing sector. Xu Peng, a 31-year-old technician at Hebei Baiyang Chengda Pharmaceutical Co., has transitioned from managing workers in a traditional warehouse to overseeing robotic systems in a modern logistics center, where efficiency has dramatically increased.

This shift from social management to technical management highlights the evolving skill requirements in the industry. Xu, originally trained in vehicle engineering, has had to relearn concepts in electrical engineering, automation, and mechanical principles to effectively manage the robotic systems. Similarly, other technicians like Zhang Weiliang and Pan Longjie emphasize the necessity of combining skills in electrical control and programming to troubleshoot robotic issues, as the demand for such hybrid capabilities grows.

As more warehouses adopt automated systems, the role of Smart Warehouse Operations Technicians is becoming crucial. Data shows that automated systems can significantly enhance operational efficiency, with some facilities reporting over threefold increases in output. However, technicians like Xu acknowledge the need for further training in programming and system architecture to address complex issues, underscoring that the future workforce will require individuals who can interpret data and communicate with robotic systems effectively.

Editor's Note

The emergence of the Smart Warehouse Operations Technician role reflects a broader trend in the logistics industry towards automation and advanced technology integration. As warehouses increasingly adopt robotic systems, the demand for skilled professionals who can manage and optimize these technologies will continue to rise. This shift presents both challenges and opportunities for workforce development in the sector.
