Company Overview

Hybrid Robotics is a research lab at the University of California, Berkeley, led by Koushil Sreenath, associate professor of mechanical engineering. The lab works at the intersection of applied nonlinear control and hybrid dynamical robotics, aiming for dynamic, energy-efficient and robust maneuvers on legged and aerial robots. It publishes its code on GitHub (HybridRobotics) and videos on its YouTube channel.

Robots and projects. The lab's current platforms include Cassie Cal, a 20-DOF bipedal robot developed by Agility Robotics; MIT's Mini Cheetah quadruped; and the Dega quadrotor drone that carries a suspended payload. Projects listed on the lab site cover running, jumping, ball juggling and hovershoe riding with Cassie, a 3 m/s running gait on the MABEL biped, dynamic walking over random stepping stones on ATRIAS, real-world humanoid locomotion on Digit, and quadruped work on torque control, stepping stones, a robotic goalkeeper, a robotic guide dog and autonomous navigation, as well as quadrotor UAVs and exoskeletons.

Berkeley Humanoid Lite. Presented at Robotics: Science and Systems 2025, Berkeley Humanoid Lite is an open-source, customizable humanoid about 1 m tall and roughly 16 kg, with total hardware cost under US$5,000 at US market prices. Its body and modular cycloidal gearboxes are 3D-printed on standard desktop printers, with remaining parts sourced from common e-commerce suppliers, and a broken gearbox can be reprinted and swapped. The hardware design, embedded code and training and deployment frameworks are publicly released; the robot supports joystick teleoperation, object grasping and bipedal walking with a reinforcement-learning locomotion controller, and the team estimates a novice can build one in about a week. The project involved Ph.D. students from mechanical engineering and EECS.
