San Francisco startup founded in 2024 making open-source mobile manipulators: the single-arm R1D1 ($18,500, 6-DOF, 3 kg payload) and dual-arm R2D3.
Open Droids is a US robotics startup founded in March 2024 that builds open-source mobile manipulators and offers custom robot design, manufacturing and integration. The Robot Report, reporting in December 2024, named Abhishek Gupta, Jackson Jesionowski and Ashish Gupta as founders and placed the company in San Francisco; the current team page lists Jack Jay as founder, alongside board members, advisors and a group of robotics researchers and engineers. The company says it is funded by the founder of Tether, shows DNA Fund, Percival, Blockchain Founders Fund and Welara among its backers, and lists Google DeepMind and the NVIDIA Inception Program as partners.
The first product, R1D1, launched in August 2024. It pairs an autonomous mobile base with a 6-DOF arm offering 62.2 cm (24.49 in) of reach and a 3 kg (6.61 lb) payload, mounted on a 1.22 m (4 ft) vertical-stroke actuator so it can work at multiple heights. It uses a depth camera for perception, LiDAR and ultrasonic sensors for navigation, and automated docking for self-charging, with an open-source software stack aimed at schools, universities, research labs and developers. It was listed at $18,500 and has been marked sold out. R2D3, a dual-arm version with a lifting platform, coordinated two-arm manipulation and data collection and training functions, was shown at CES 2025. The website also lists R1D3, an autonomous service robot with LiDAR navigation, a vertical lift, a 7-DOF arm, a touchscreen and voice interface, swappable grippers and self-charging.
Beyond complete robots, Open Droids offers the DH116 dexterous hand with tactile sensing for humanoid and prosthetic applications, and a data-collection glove for motion capture and teleoperation, both on pre-order. It publishes code on GitHub and runs a robot simulator and a builder challenge for developers.
Commercially, the company sells robots through a robotics-as-a-service subscription with no upfront hardware cost and runs a territory program for operators starting their own RaaS business. Target markets listed on its site include restaurants (food running, bussing), hotels (room delivery, concierge, linen transport, cleaning), hospitals (medication and specimen delivery, disinfection), warehouses, retail, airports, manufacturing, agriculture, security patrol and solar panel cleaning. In 2026 the company stated that it is working toward US final assembly and domestic end product status under 48 CFR 25.101(a) in response to the FCC's restrictions on foreign-produced robotic devices.
