North American Robot Orders Surge Nearly 25% in Q3 2023

Robot orders in North America reached their highest levels of the year, according to the Association for Advancing Automation (A3). This growth occurred amid improving manufacturing activity, despite challenges related to input costs and trade. Notably, the semiconductor and electronics sector experienced a remarkable 97.6% increase in robot orders compared to the previous year.
The significance of this growth lies in its widespread distribution across various industries, with automotive components and plastics and rubber also showing substantial increases of 90.4% and 67.7%, respectively. The rise in orders reflects the impact of federal policies aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, such as the CHIPS and Science Act, which have spurred investment in robotics.
A3 reported that collaborative robots accounted for a considerable portion of orders in Q3, with 1,831 units valued at $63.8 million. These robots represent a growing trend in the life sciences and semiconductor sectors, where they made up 43.8% and 36.9% of orders, respectively. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
