New Drone Flight Restrictions at U.S.-Mexico Border Impact Commercial Operators

New federal regulations have been introduced to restrict drone operations along the U.S.-Mexico border, aiming to combat cartel drone activities. The U.S. Department of Transportation, Department of War, and Department of Homeland Security announced a temporary flight restriction (TFR) that prohibits unauthorized drone flights within one nautical mile of the border and up to 400 feet above ground level.
Scott Shtofman, vice president of the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), emphasized the need for clearer access for legitimate drone operators affected by the TFR, which spans nearly 2,000 miles from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico. He noted that while the TFR is intended to enhance security, it may also hinder essential drone operations such as commercial surveys and agricultural activities, which are not explicitly mentioned in the regulation.
The AUVSI is advocating for enhancements to the TFR, including clearer criteria for commercial drone approvals and a review point for operator feedback. As the TFR is set to last for a year, the impact on legitimate drone operations in border communities remains a critical concern, especially as both the U.S. and Mexico intensify counter-drone efforts against cartel activities.
