"Loyal to the Leaf"
US-headquartered crop intelligence firm using submillimeter aerial imagery and AI to give ag retailers and advisors leaf-level field insights.
Taranis is an agricultural technology company that sells an AI-based crop intelligence platform built on very high-resolution aerial imagery of row-crop fields. The company was founded in 2015 in Tel Aviv, Israel, by Ofir Schlam, Asaf Horvitz, Eli Bukchin and Ayal Karmi, a group the company describes as four friends who combined agricultural backgrounds with technology expertise. In December 2020 Taranis announced that it would move its global headquarters from Tel Aviv to Westfield, Indiana, committing to invest USD 10.5 million over three years and to add up to 60 jobs, with Indiana's Economic Development Corporation offering conditional tax credits. The Tel Aviv office was retained as an innovation and R&D center. The company's website now lists its US office at 873 W Carmel Dr., Carmel, Indiana, and its Israeli office in Tel Aviv-Yafo; it also has an office in Campinas, Brazil.
The core of the Taranis offering is image acquisition at submillimeter resolution. Taranis has used patented imaging systems mounted on drones (UAVs) and manned aircraft that capture field imagery with detail down to about 0.5 mm, which deep-learning models then analyze at the level of individual leaves. In 2018 Taranis acquired Mavrx, a US aerial imaging company, to expand its aerial photography capacity for field-crop monitoring. The platform detects and quantifies stand counts, weed pressure, insect damage, nutrient deficiencies, disease pressure and overall field health, and turns these detections into recommendations for agronomic action. Taranis states that its models have been trained on hundreds of millions of leaf-level data points (500 million by its most recent figure).
Commercially, Taranis positions itself as a full-service platform for agricultural retailers and crop advisors rather than for direct sale to individual growers; the company describes itself as 100% focused on helping advisors demonstrate value to growers. Products named on its website include Taranis Yield Impact, which converts leaf-level insights into yield predictions, and Ag Assistant, a generative-AI agronomy engine. Its service model covers onboarding, image acquisition, analysis and action steps, so the customer receives finished insights rather than raw imagery. The company reports more than 100 customers, over 3 million subscribed acres and around 370 employees, and serves markets in the United States, Brazil and Europe.
Taranis is venture-backed. It raised a USD 20 million Series B, a USD 30 million Series C in July 2020 led by Vertex Growth, and a USD 40 million Series D in September 2022 led by Inven Capital, bringing total funding to about USD 100 million. Other investors named in its funding announcements include Viola Ventures, Vertex Ventures Israel, Finistere Ventures, Hitachi Ventures, Seraphim Space Investment Trust, Farglory Group, OurCrowd, iAngels, Micron Ventures, UMC Capital, Presidio Ventures (Sumitomo) and Cavallo Ventures (Wilbur-Ellis). In January 2025 Syngenta Crop Protection and Taranis announced a strategic AI partnership, which was expanded in October 2025 with a rollout to Midwest agricultural retailers for the 2026 growing season and the addition of yield projection algorithms to Ag Assistant. Current leadership listed on the company website includes CEO Opher Flohr and President and co-founder Ofir Schlam.
Taranis applies drone- and aircraft-based remote sensing and computer vision to field scouting, replacing manual walking of fields with automated, plant-level detection across large acreages.
