Kingston University to Lead UK’s First Robotics Hub for Waste and Recycling
- Published
Kingston University has been appointed to spearhead the UK's inaugural dedicated hub for waste and recycling robotics, known as the National Waste and Recycling Robotics Adoption Hub (NORAH). This initiative is part of a £40 million government scheme aimed at enhancing automation in the waste sector, with Kingston University receiving £1.5 million of the £3.6 million project budget.
The establishment of NORAH is significant as it addresses the low adoption rate of automation in UK waste facilities, where fewer than five percent currently utilize robotic systems. By focusing on complex materials like textiles and mixed recyclables, the hub aims to improve material recovery and productivity while creating skilled jobs in a challenging industrial environment.
Looking ahead, the NORAH project plans to support over 150 organizations and achieve operational deployments by 2030. The hub will leverage advanced technologies and economic modeling to facilitate the testing and implementation of robotics in real waste streams, ultimately promoting wider adoption across the sector.
