Amsterdam construction robotics startup deploying autonomous bricklaying robot fleets (Pisa/Petra/Panama) on Dutch job sites under AI software Atrium.
Monumental is an Amsterdam, Netherlands-based construction robotics company founded in 2021 by Salar al Khafaji (CEO) and Sebastiaan Visser (CTO). Both founders previously co-founded Silk, a data visualization company acquired by Palantir in 2016. The company builds autonomous robots that lay masonry bricks on live construction sites, addressing severe labor shortages and rising costs in the European construction sector.
Monumental's robotic system comprises a coordinated fleet of three specialized machines. Pisa is the bricklaying robot that picks up bricks and places them with precision. Petra serves as the brick supply robot, keeping Pisa stocked with materials. Panama is the mortar supply robot, dispensing liquid mortar for each course of bricks. Together, the three robots operate autonomously alongside human workers on the same site, with Monumental acting as a subcontractor to general contractors.
The robots are compact enough to pass through standard doorways and fit inside a standard van, which is critical for navigating the constrained environments of urban European construction sites. Each unit uses sensors, machine vision, and small cranes. The machine vision stack enables accurate on-site localization, while the software models both the physical site geometry and robot positions in real time.
Atrium is Monumental's AI-powered operating system for the robots. It orchestrates robot movement and decision-making, interprets complex construction blueprints, and makes real-time adjustments as site conditions change. Monumental describes Atrium as the "software-defined" layer that turns the physical robots into a programmable construction platform.
The company completed its first large-scale deployment in 2023, constructing a 15-metre facade for an office and warehouse building in the Netherlands. Subsequent projects include social housing construction and canal retaining walls. Monumental has active partnerships with multiple top-25 general contractors in the Netherlands.
In February 2024, Monumental raised $25 million (approximately EUR 23.2 million) in a funding round co-led by Plural and Hummingbird, with Northzone, Foundamental, NP-Hard Ventures, and Material Ventures also participating. The company is headquartered near Artis zoo in the Plantage neighborhood, Amsterdam, and employed approximately 96 people as of mid-2026.
